The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has taken its name from the family of Al - Saud, the House of the Saud, and traces its origins to 1745. Saudi Arabia comprises 850, 000 square miles of the territory of the Arabian Peninsula, and it is the birthplace of Islam. Thus, millions of Muslims from all over the globe annually visit the holy sites in Makkah and Madina. The House of Allah ( Ka'aba ), the place every Muslim faces in prayer, is located in Makkah, which is only 78 kilometers from Jeddah. The Mosque of the Prophet Mohammad ( PBUH ) and his grave are located in the city of Madina, 410 kilometers from Jeddah.

The Kingdom's laws, traditions and customs are based on its commitment to Islam as a legislative system and as a lifestyle. As a result, the Saudi society enjoys public, personal and property security that is unmatched in most parts of the world today.
Since oil was first discovered in Saudi Arabia in 1936, the country has experienced remarkable development in all aspects of modern civilization. Today, the primary goal of Saudi Arabia is to provide for the economic and social well being of its people. This goal is fulfilled through:
1. The transformation of the economy from overwhelming dependency on the export of crude oil into a diversified industrial economy; and
2. The development of human skills and resources as well as the maintenance of a stable society. Accordingly, education has topped the list of priorities of the Kingdom's leadership, and

it remains the cornerstone of the country's development policy.
The education sector has made tremendous strides since the establishment of the Ministry of Education in 1953. The first Minister of Education was Fahd Ibn Abdulaziz Al - Saud, the present King, who pioneered the establishment of the country's education system.
In strengthening this foundation and furthering the opportunities for education for all Saudis, Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz has demonstrated determination, and dedication to develop and implement a sound educational policy throughout the country. Today, the Kingdom prides itself on its fine system of education, which covers the entire spectrum of educational institutions - from primary, intermediate and secondary schools to vocational centers, colleges and universities.

The City of Jeddah

Jeddah is the second largest city ( after Riyadh the capital ) in Saudi Arabia. It is traditionally known as the main commercial and trading center of Saudi Arabia and the gateway for Muslim pilgrims who come to the Kingdom to visit the holy sites and perform the Umrah and the Hajj. Jeddah is one of the best places in Saudi Arabia for shopping facilities. There are well - stocked western - style supermarkets and ultra - modern, air - conditioned shopping centers. There are also dozens of local markets (souks) with a traditional atmosphere.
